As independent artists without a major label behind us, we often learn via trial and error. Drawing from the experiences of other indie artists help us to grow and improve in areas we may have overlooked. Here are a few things that can help you boost your social media impact.

common mistakes for indie artists to avoid on social media

1) PRIVATE ACCOUNTS

It's normal to have aspects of your life that you wish to remain private. However, if you're looking for exposure as an artist you need to have an account that allows fans and potential collaborators to see what you do. Create a separate account for your music if you want to keep personal things private.

2) NO BIO

Mainstream music artists have the ability to be mysterious, independent artists do not have that luxury. If a new potential fan stumbles onto your account, you need to summarize why they should follow you. Let them know what your music is about or what motivates you to create what you create. This is your biggest chance to connect with someone who doesn't know you, so don't assume they already know what drives you.

3) ONLY A LINK IN BIO

Big name artists can get by with this, but the rest of us cannot. Have you ever clicked on a link you've received from someone you don't know? Most likely the answer is no, so you shouldn't expect anyone else to do it either.  Presume that anyone reaching your profile does not know much about you, and give them a reason to trust that it's okay to click the link in your bio.
