I had the opportunity to chat with the multi-talented artist/producer Curtis Metcalf. In this brief Q&A he shares his story, musical inspiration and good food for thought for artists.
Achickwitbeatz: Who is Curtis Metcalf?
Curtis Metcalf: Curtis Metcalf. Something of an enigma to those that don't know him. A crafty genius & inventor to those that do know. Overall the name is a tribute to Dwayne McDuffie, the late comics writer that had a hand in inventing the Milestone Media universe he came from. He starred in the comic Hardware. DC Comics owns that now. I liked the name when I was 13 & things like that stuck with me.
Achickwitbeatz: When did you discover that you needed music to be a part of your life?
Curtis Metcalf: I was always around music. Where I'm from, Mobile, Alabama is basically a blues town. There was a few bands that stayed on my street. As a kid I would ride my bike a couple houses down just to hear them practice. This was maybe 1986. We also had this place named The Harlem Duke Social Club. It was really renown for having the best performers in the country in it's heyday. Due to bad management & neglect in later years, arson claimed it in 2012. I grew up on that great Hip Hop from the 80s when groups where saying something of substance. Public Enemy, Ultramagnetic MC's are two of my influences. Around that time I was freestyling off the dome before it was known to be something to practice.
Achickwitbeatz: What's the most vauable thing you've learned since you began your musical career?
Curtis Metcalf: Listen with discernment. What doesn't vibrate with you may resonate with others. Don't give up on your ideas.
Achickwitbeatz: What are 5 attributes/skills that would place an artist on your top 10 list?
Curtis Metcalf: Originality, subject matter, flow, stage presence, being social.
Achickwitbeatz: Conversely, what are 5 attributes that would place an artist at the very bottom of your list?
Curtis Metcalf: Catering solely to the commercial arena, lacking soul, not speaking from the heart, ignorant to social issues & overall wackness.
Achickwitbeatz: What can people expect from Curtis Metcalf?
Curtis Metcalf: Great music. Mind provoking verses. A standard for quality that all in Hip Hop music & culture should shoot for.
Achickwitbeatz: How can people connect with you and stay current with what you have in the works?
Curtis Metcalf: The best ways to connect & build with me are......
