So I definitely hope you enjoy it. Make sure that you check it out on streaming platforms as well.
00:24
So before I go ahead and drop that first beat, I gotta give a shout out to my home station, Grander Radio out of Grand Rapids, Michigan. And with that, let's go.
[BEAT BREAK]
11:27
Alright, I'm music producer Achickwitbeatz back with the music biz brief. First up, Pershing Square submitted a non-binding $64 billion proposal to acquire Universal Music Group, the merger that would create a new US company, expected to list on the New York Stock Exchange. The offer value is universal at just over 30 euros per share, which is a 78% premium, combining cash and shares.
11:54
The firm says the deal addresses factors it believes have weighed on Universal's stock, including delayed U.S. listing plans and investor-related concerns. The acquisition is anticipated to close by the end of the year. Universal Music Group and Believe have settled a major copyright lawsuit for alleged industrial-scale infringement over manipulated tracks distributed without authorization through Tunecore.
12:15
Filed in late 2024, the claim accused believed of monetizing sped up or remixed versions of copyrighted recordings on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and TikTok, often under misspelled artist names. The claims were dismissed with prejudice, meaning they can't be refiled. The financial terms were undisclosed. The US Supreme Court vacated a $46.7 million copyright infringement verdict against internet provider Grande Communications, sending the case back to a lower court for reconsideration.
12:45
This decision follows the court's recent ruling in the Cox vs. Sony music, which limits when internet service providers can be held liable for user piracy, stating that they're not responsible unless they actively induce infringement or offer services designed for it. The outcome could impact even more cases that are similar involving the internet service providers and tech platforms that are facing music copyright claims.
13:07
Pop music's global charts have stalled into 2026 with new releases struggling to compete against long-running hits and resurgent catalog tracks. In January, only 3.5% of Spotify's global top 50 were current year tracks down from previous years. The trend reflects superstar releases dominating charts, fragmented audiences across platforms, and streaming's quote-unquote immortality effect, where older songs stay prominent on playlists. Once again, another reminder to make the music that you wanna make.
13:37
the trendy stuff doesn't always stick around. Atlantic Music Group has entered a multi-level partnership with Fader Label that includes a 50-50 joint venture to sign and develop artists, along with distribution and support for Fader's existing roster and catalog. The deal also expands the capabilities of Fader Distribution, which is the label's independent distribution arm. The agreement is part of Atlantic's strategy to build partnerships with independent labels and artist development platforms.
14:04
Independent folk artist Murphy Campbell had her voice cloned by AI with unauthorized versions of her songs appearing on Spotify and then face fraudulent copyright claims on her YouTube recordings through Vydia's Content ID system. The claims, which targeted public domain songs like In the Pines, were removed and the user banned. Vydia emphasized that AI was not used to generate the claims and that the incidents exploited gaps in the content recognition protections.
14:32
And anybody who's put music out there on various platforms can attest that those processes are definitely flawed. AI music platform Suno is reportedly in a licensing standoff with Universal Music Group and Sony Music over how user-generated tracks can be shared. The dispute is whether AI-created songs should stay within the platform or be freely distributed, with the labels pushing for tighter control to limit unauthorized spread.
14:59
The disagreement follows major labels Sue and Suno in 2024 over copyright issues. AI music platform Udio signed a licensing deal with Kobalt, allowing its upcoming subscription service to train on authorized music from Kobalt's catalog. The platform plans to let users create remixes, covers, and original tracks using opted-in artists' voices and compositions, with creators credited and paid. The agreement adds to Udio recent deals with Universal, Warner, and Merlin,
15:27
as it shifts toward a fully licensed model following earlier copyright disputes. And this here is bit of a fun fact. Influencer marketing now accounts for around 50% of promotional budgets for Indian film soundtrack songs, according to a new report, with creators driving campaigns on platforms like Instagram reels. YouTube ads make up about 30%, while the remainder is spent on streaming platforms to boost discoverability. Promotion costs per track can range from roughly $16,000
15:56
to over 160,000 on top of rising soundtrack acquisition costs, which has prompted some music companies to invest directly in film production to secure rights. And finally, Music Cares has opened its 2026 Wellness in Music Survey, an annual initiative that tracks the health, financial stability, and overall well-being of music professionals. Open through April 17th, the anonymous survey helps guide the organization's support efforts, totaling over $135 million since 2020,
16:26
including 17 million distributed in 2025 across mental health services, financial assistance, and disaster relief. So if you want to participate, make sure you check out Music Cares. All right, and that's a wrap for the music biz brief. I'm going to take a quick pause for the cause and then I'll be back to present Poetic Soundscapes right after this. Keep it locked. Hey, I'm Achickwitbeatz, multi-genre music producer and strategist to indie artists and labels.
