Alright music producer Achickwitbeatz, back with the Music Biz Brief as promised. First up,  Curve Royalty Systems is set for sale to Merlin and Jamen Capital by Universal Music Group and its subsidiary Virgin Music Group for an undisclosed amount. The European Commission required the divestment to approve Universal's purchase of Downtown Music Holdings in February, allowing the royalty platform to operate independently from the major label. Curve president will lead it as CEO with management

and teams keeping their positions.  The American Federation of Musicians, better known as AFM union, is suing Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group for the artist's share of their settlements with AI music generators, Suno and Udio. AFM says that the labels protected their own interests and created a significant source of new revenue with settlements and licenses,  but haven't compensated the artists whose music was copied,  used to train and develop AI models, and is now being commercially exploited.

Both labels say they're protecting artists' rights and interests during the rise of AI.  Meanwhile, Suno recently closed a $400 million funding round, giving the company a $5.4 billion valuation.  So, the money's there,  but a lot of artists aren't seeing it. Universal Music Group is offering a €1 billion bond, which is worth $1.15 billion, and they're offering it in two parts at €500 million each.

The company was founded in 2021 after spinning out of mtheory. They administer eight figures in master-point royalties annually, and they've distributed over $5 million in advances to producers. Milk & Honey signed on to partner and advise on merger and acquisition opportunities. Warner Music Group plans to acquire Surreal AI, a company that uses patented AI DNA technology to monitor how artists work is used to train generative AI models.

Founded by former Stanford Visiting Assistant Professor Dr. Aykut, the company was built to let rights holders know how AI interacts with their work and share fairly in the value it creates. In addition to IP origin, it also offers audit and compliance reporting and name, image, and likeness attribution. And as it is, Surreal will remain a standalone platform. Music prediction on Kalshi hit $400 million this year.

Users can place bets and predictions on potential music events including music release dates,  artist collaborations, and Spotify listeners at the end of any given month.  While insider trading is banned, music labels could view these predictions as indicators of what audiences want from their artists, for instance, dream collaborations and specific release dates, and they might work behind the scenes to make them occur. Global Music Rights is suing Music Choice for performing 95 songs from the PRO's catalog after their licensing deal expired. Music Choice distributes music programming via linear TV channels, streaming apps, and on-demand services. GMR sent notice on the day of expiration, which was December 31st of last year.

that any public performance of the songs on or after January 1st this year would be willful copyright infringement with statutory damages up to $150,000 per infringement. Google wants any artist's copyright lawsuit over its Lyria 3 AI dismiss, claiming artists licensed their music for training when they uploaded it to YouTube via its terms of service. The company says Lyria 3 is one of YouTube's affiliates and the terms of service allow worldwide non-exclusive, royalty-free,  sub-licensable, and transferable license to use uploaded content to reproduce,  distribute,  and prepare derivative works.

So heads up, if you upload your music to YouTube, they feel they have the right to do whatever they want with it. Yikes. Music metadata focus project Sesh won first place at OpenPlay's CoLab. The AI-powered studio companion runs in the background during creative sessions to capture contributors, credits, and splits, and then converts them into CSV and other files needed to build accurate metadata.

Sesh is not to be confused with the music credit startup Session, which was acquired by royalty processing company Salt.  Could come with lot of pros and maybe some cons too.  We'll see how it develops. Universal Music Group opened Def Jam Recordings North Africa, expanding its reach in the MENA region. Based in Casablanca, Morocco, the label intends to work with North African rap artists throughout Maghreb.

Founded in 1984, Def Jam now has brand representation in Sub-Saharan Africa,  Southeast Asia, the UK, India, Sweden, and Chengdu, China. The National Music Publishers Association announced AI licensing deals with UDO Anne KLAY. NMPA members in good standing can review and join the deals once contacted with instructions and details. The organization plans to continue litigation against what they're calling bad actors in the AI space.

and additionally launched an AI song summit with pros, songwriter groups,  and streaming services to combat “the malicious use of AI.” Deezer opened up its free AI music detector tool to anyone who wants to know how much AI-generated music is in their playlists on any streaming service. Listeners can visit Deezer's website, select their streaming service, and allow Deezer to scan their playlists, up to 100 per user, to flag any fully AI-generated tracks.

The platform now receives about 75,000 AI-generated tracks daily, equivalent to 44% of its new music submissions. Deezer excludes fully AI-generated tracks from its algorithmic and editorial playlist,  and says its detector can identify Suno and Udio models with 99.8% accuracy.  So if you wanna know, make sure you check that out.  And finally, threads rolled out music stickers to everyone after beta testing with select users.

Creators can add 30 seconds of a song to text, photo, and video posts and replies displaying the artist and song title, cover art, or art and lyrics.
