SoundExchange collects & distributes digital performance royalties for recording artists (45%) & sound recording copyright owners (50%).*
Digital performance royalties are owed whenever music is “performed” (transmitted) digitally on non-interactive webcasts, satellite radio and internet radio such as Pandora, SiriusXM, etc.
This differs from the royalties collected by performance rights organizations (ascap, bmi, sesac, etc.) for songwriters & composers, which is why it’s important to register with a PRO as well as SoundExchange. Registering with SoundExchange is free.
* (Non featured artists [backup musicians & session players] receive their 5% royalties via other organizations such as AFM & SAG-AFTRA).
