Hire legal counsel before signing a contract. Music contracts can vary greatly and cover a vast amount of details. Having a basic understanding of these concepts can help you be better prepared to take control of your career.
Masters: The first/original recordings from which all other copies are made. Whoever owns these owns the rights to monetize the recording.
Publishing: Monetizing the musical composition (music & lyrics) separately from the master recording.
Advance: Money credited to the artist to be repaid through record sales or “recouped” through earned artist royalties.
Recoupment: Deducting specified expenses from the artist’s royalty payments.
Royalties: “Artist royalties” are paid to the artist for the recorded performance. Mechanical royalties are paid to publishers/songwriters.
